The complete series consists of 12 unique works

towards the sun is a collection of 12 watercolor paintings born from an exercise in moving through creative resistance. In a period of artistic block, these works emerged as a quiet yet intentional act of perseverance—guided by the steady, unhurried growth of plants. Observing their resilience, the series became an ode to endurance, a reminder that even in difficult seasons, there is movement toward light.

Each piece is composed of layered botanical forms rendered in delicate, translucent washes of blue. The softness of the medium and the ethereal quality of the imagery create a sense of lightness and surrender, while the crisp lines of the compositions hold a quiet strength. Through this interplay, the series embodies both fragility and persistence, mirroring the way growth unfolds over time.

The act of painting these works was itself an exercise in presence—engaging with the rhythm of water, pigment, and paper. With each layer, the work builds upon what came before, embracing the passage of time and the unseen foundations that shape what is to come.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUES

This collection of original watercolor paintings is created using layered washes of professional-grade watercolors on handmade JS Swan 250 g/m² paper. The technique involves building up transparent layers, allowing for delicate tonal shifts and a natural sense of depth within the compositions. Each brushstroke interacts with the textured grain of the paper, influencing how the pigment settles and creating subtle variations that give each piece its distinct character.

The paintings feature fine botanical details, achieved by layering controlled washes and precise linear elements. The interplay between wet-on-wet blending and dry-brush techniques adds fluidity while maintaining crisp, defined edges where necessary. This balance between soft diffusion and structured forms mirrors the resilience and organic growth of plant life.

The use of Sennelier watercolors, known for their lightfastness and high pigment concentration, ensures vibrant, lasting color integrity. The slow-drying nature of the pigments allows for intentional blending and controlled transitions between hues, contributing to the ethereal quality of the final compositions. The meditative and meticulous process behind these paintings reflects the theme of patience, endurance, and quiet transformation—echoing the natural world’s own cycles of growth and renewal.
