Linocut, collage, and paper cutting
15 × 21 cm each
The complete series consists of 16 unique works
magic in the mirror is a visual dialogue on self-perception, transformation, and the power of affirmation. This series of 16 unique mixed-media works merges linocut printmaking, collage, and paper cutting to create vibrant, layered compositions that each serve as daily reminders of self-worth. Each piece features a bold botanical motif—rooted in the symbolism of continual growth and resilience—accompanied by a carefully chosen phrase, hand-cut at its center. These openings reveal a mirrored surface beneath, placing the viewer within the artwork itself and inviting them to see their reflection within the words.
The series explores the intimate process of self-reflection—both literal and emotional—as the act of seeing oneself in these affirmations challenges internal narratives. The bright, unapologetic color palette asserts a presence, encouraging viewers to occupy space with confidence and embrace the truths embedded in each statement. Through the interplay of texture, color, and reflection, the work becomes an interactive experience—one that invites not just observation but personal participation in the practice of self-affirmation and inner belief, mirroring the complexity of personal growth.
By engaging directly with their own image in these affirmations, viewers are encouraged to embrace their worth, strength, and the magic they carry within.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUES
This collection merges traditional printmaking with collage and paper cutting techniques to create layered, tactile compositions. Each piece begins with linoleum relief printing, a technique in which a design is hand-carved into a plate made out of linoleum material. The carved areas remain ink-free while the raised surfaces retain the ink, allowing for a crisp and high-contrast impression. The inked plate is then pressed onto a smooth surfaced paper, ideal for relief printmaking techniques.
A two-plate registration method is used to achieve the multi-layered composition, meaning two separate linoleum plates are carved and printed in succession to build depth and contrast in the botanical forms. Registration, the precise alignment of these layers, is a critical step to ensure clarity and cohesion in the final print.
Once the linoleum print layers are completed, a third layer is introduced through collage, incorporating hand-cut Japanese Kozo paper, a strong yet lightweight material traditionally used in printmaking and bookbinding. These collaged elements enhance the vibrancy of the design, adding another dimension to the composition.
The final stage involves precision paper cutting, where the affirmation text is meticulously excised from the artwork. These cut-out words reveal a mirror-backed surface, creating an interactive experience where the viewer's reflection becomes part of the piece. The interplay between positive and negative space, layered textures, and mirrored reflections reinforces the conceptual foundation of the series—self-perception, transformation, and affirmation. Because each work is printed, collaged, and cut by hand, every piece is entirely unique, bearing the subtle nuances that highlight the organic and handcrafted nature of traditional printmaking.
