ADAM

for over 100 years Adam has been a point of reference for artists as a pigment manufacturer, titling themselves as marchand de couleurs since 1989. the shop quickly gained fame as it was the only art shop in Paris allowing customers to manipulate and see the supplies directly, not placing them behind glass shelves. more than simply a shop and manufacturer, Adam gained a reputation as providing color solutions to their clients. they are responsible for the creation of Yves Klein’s iconic IKB (International Klein Blue) blue as well as creating Alexander Calder’s varnish for his metal sculptures.

though i don’t use it in my practice myself, i love walking into their space to take in the color inspiration, looking at the bottles and bags filled with pure powdered pigmet.

LA MAISON DU PASTEL

the incredible story of La Maison du Pastel starts in the 18th century, over 300 years ago, in 1720, when they first began offering handmade pastels to artists. the recipe currently used for their exceptional pastels was created by Henri Roché, when he took over the business in 1865, since then the recipe has been handed down from generation to generation, honouring its history and handmade origin. today (and since 1912), the little workshop and boutique lies in the center of Le Marais neighborhood, hidden away from the noise of the streets within a small residential courtyard, behind a beautiful wooden door that tells its own story. the shop only opens once a week, on thursday afternoons, so make sure to plan this special spot into your visit and add some time to really take in and discover all the beauty, inspiration, and history this magical place has to offer.

disclaimer: you are not walking in this space for a bargain of cheap materials, but rather incredibly pigmented and quality handmade art pieces in themselves. i would suggest to visit La Maison du Pastel even if you are not looking to purchase, the place offers way more value than that.

i’m a sucker for everything in their antique collection, but am specially obsessed with their vintage color charts.

why can’t i choose #1?
because as a multidisciplinary artist,
i am obsessed with each & every one of them

all i crave in my practice is creative freedom. i struggled with having multiple creative pulls for so long, trying my best to not to listen and completely ignore my inner voice, always telling myself that only by choosing one single medium and one single technique will i be a real artist, will i find my voice.

it took me a minute (ha! if only!) and only the realization that i was no longer feeling joy from my practice to realize and intentionally decide that i wasn’t listening to those “rules” anymore. my creative practice is for me, and there’s nothing more magical than exploring and discovering completely new things. those pulls come from within me and they are exactly why i want to continue creating.

If what i crave in life as a creative is freedom then why would i box myself in from that freedom simply out of fear? through the years i have created so much beauty, beauty that has made me grow and has healed me. listening to these inner creative pulls allows my inner artist to continually grow and expand within me, creating new inspiration for beautiful new work and collections.

i hope you too allow these places to feed you inspiration and flourish your creativity,
allowing your inner artist to bloom. remember to save this email and guide for your next visit to the city!

Behind the Scenes : the magic in the mirror collection — a collection of 16 original mixed-media linoleum prints

the magic in the mirror collection

Birds eye view of a laid out grid displaying the 'Magic in the Mirror' collection, a body of work featuring linocut, collage, paper cutting, and mirror elements. The framed pieces showcase vibrant colors and botanical graphic designs.

A gentle reminder of the magical strength of love and joy within each and every one of us.

This new collection of mixed-media pieces include 16 unique works of art that are each a reminder to care and nurture after the most important relationship of all, the relationship with ourselves. I hope these pieces bring you love, compassion, patience, peace, calm, and overall help you nurture and strengthen the relationship with you.

Each piece is created using a blend of:
linoleum printmaking + collage + paper cutting.
If you’d like to see more of the process, you can do so right here.

These paper pieces are 15 × 21 cm and come matted & framed in natural French oak wood 18 × 24 cm frames which have been locally crafted, here in France. Each piece comes hand signed and with a certificate of authenticity stating all the details of the work.

straight forward image of the artist in her paris studio. the artist is bent forward and prepping to start a drawing, holding a pencil and a ruler. in the back we see details of her studio, on the shelves there are tools, paintings, pens, artwork.

We start with a drawing

My printmaking designs usually start off with a drawing. For this body of work, taking inspiration from nature came naturally as I wanted to illustrate growth—the continuous growth we see when we show up and nurture something. I began drawing the plants that surrounded me in my home because they had been with me throughout my personal growth as much as I had been with them throughout theirs.

Next comes the carving

Once the drawing is completely finished, I separate each element in order to prepare each layer of the print. I do this by deciding how many colors will be present in the final print, one color means one layer. In this case, we have three colors, meaning three layers. I separate each by color and then transfer each separate design onto their linoleum plate for carving out the linoleum stamps. For this series I decided to make a
3-layered print but decided that the third layer would be collaged on instead of printed.

Then I begin with carving away of all the negative space in the plate. This is a slow but beautiful process. Though repetitive, you have to stay focused on how you are carving, which makes it a very meditative process.

Birds eye view of the working table during the paint mixing and linoleum plate inking process. on the table we see two carved linoleum plates with grraphic botanical designs, one inked in pink and one inked in greed, a roller inked in pink, a spatula
Up close image of the green botanical graphic linoleum plate being inked using a printmaking roller or brayer by the artist.

Throughout my process of carving a linoleum plate, there tends to be a lot of trial and re working until I am fully happy with the plate’s results. This means testing out the plate and re-carving any details that might not feel right to me. Once I am happy with the printing of each plate, comes one of my favorite parts in any creative process: playing with paint & choosing the colors.

For this series, I initially only wanted to work with one color scheme, but was experiencing so much joy in the process that I ended up creating four different colored print sets, it felt selfish to only go ahead and choose one!

Printing & printing & printing

Printmaking is known as the technique of the multiple. This means we can print multiple pieces using the same plate. When we hand print, things don’t always go as we wish— layers might not line up right, pressure might be off, smudges from our handling could occur, amongst so many other variables! Because of this, not every print becomes a final piece. I spent weeks printing these pieces, and in the final run, decided to only offer sixteen pieces (four of each color scheme) to you!

Up next— Collaging!

I wanted these pieces to be multi-layered, just like we are. In order to bring in more depth I decided to collage the final layer of each piece using different colored Japanese paper. Each piece is hand cut and then delicately placed on each printed piece.

Close up image of the artist collaging botanical elements, such as flowers and fruits, on to the linoleum print.
Close up image of the artist using an exacto knife to cut out the tiny letters that make up each cut up phrase on the linoleum botanical linoprint. These cut out letters then get layered ontop of thee mirror and therefore reflect through the phrase.

Cutting out each affirmation

I decided to cut the affirmation mantras out from each piece because I wanted to be able to layer a reflective background behind each piece.

Each affirmation comes from a place where I have struggled throughout the past year. I started working on this series on October 2020, and almost a year later I have built a collection of phrases that empowers me and helps me fight those negative narratives when they sometimes pop in my head. I hope these pieces help you as much as they have helped me.

& finally— assembling + framing

It was important to me that pieces act as a reminder of your power, your importance, and your beauty and adding a mirror to help you see yourself directly in each mantra was a sweet way to remind you of just that. These pieces are strong, but what really makes them strong is you.

Close up image of the artist framing a piece. we see her hands holding the frame backing and her laying the backing over the mirror piece belonging to the piece.

Because of the mirror aspect in these pieces, framing was extremely important. It took me a while to find the perfect frames, but these natural oak frames are truly just wonderful, and best of all, they are locally made, right here in la France!

They are simple, elegant, soft, and honestly just perfect. I cannot wait for you to hold one in your own hands.

I hope you enjoyed this little behind the scenes of the magic in the mirror collection, I really enjoy bringing you along my process and letting you see inside my creative practice.
